Swimming….what’s that all about?
Posted by admin
Who ever invented swimming?
Today I found out why I had avoided the long black line for so long.
To put it simply…..I suck. After 50 metres I felt ordinary and thought that I might just take some time to warm up. Another lap and it was confirmed….I CAN”T SWIM!!!
After refusing the offers of rescuing from a squad of 7 year olds, I managed to push through a few more laps to complete a very slow 900m. There was a bucket load of rests, and even more water swallowed during my first session.
Got home and searched for a swim coach online. Chatted to some people on Transitions about swimming and gained some encouragment knowing I wasn’t alone.
Think it’s going to take me a while to get a hang of this swimming gig…especially if I am going to do it for 3.8km.
Stay tuned….
20 weeks to go - 9 training session
Posted by admin
To prepare for my first Half Ironman triathlon in 20 weeks time I am following a program from www.beginnertriathlete.com
I was asking around on www.transitions.org.au (a great forum where I ask most of my silly triathlon questions) and Paul pointed me towards a program to follow.
Here is what I need to get through in my first week of training:
Monday: Run and swim session
Tuesday: Run and bike session
Wednesday: Swim session
Thursday: Run session
Friday: Swim and bike session
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Bike session
So there you have it - 9 sessions in total….apart from the swimming, none of them overly difficult but still going to be a challenge to fit them all in.

Journey to Ironman - Intro video
Posted by admin
It was such an inspiring day watching all the competitors who have obviously spent so many hours training and preparing for this one race.
99% of the competitors have no aspiration to win, however they have a drive and determination that helps them to not only conquer the course, but often their own personal journey along the way.
So here I go!
So I thought I would give it a go.
I have done a few half marathons in the past (I took forever!!!), and am helping two Gold Coast cyclists prepare for their own big journey, but other than that have no experience in the sport of triathlon, or for that matter endurance racing.
For some reason the Ironman intrigues me and I want to not only find out what it’s like to finish an event like this, but also what it’s like to devote so much time to training for one of these events.
My Diary
As part of this journey I thought it would be interesting to keep a video diary along the way and I am going to post regular video’s on the site so that other’s can share in my journey.
Here is the small video that I made whilst down in Port Macquarie in April. (To watch a clearer version just double click on the video and then click on ‘watch in high quality’ on the YouTube page)
I am posting it today, as today marks 20 weeks until the Half Ironman that I need to complete before I am eligible to have a crack at the big one. Stay tuned for more updates along the way.
