Breakfast is meant to be the most important meal of the day, but why? Here are 8 great reasons why you should never skip breakfast again!
1. Burn more fat!
Eating breakfast gives your metabolism a “kickstart” so that you burn more energy throughout the day. Research has shown that by skipping breakfast, people burn an average of 150 fewer calories than those who eat regularly. So in the mornings you can do 30 minutes of swimming, 15 minutes of digging in the garden, or grab some cereal to ensure your body burns more energy all day long!
2. Lower Cholesterol!
Oats and some breakfast cereals are high in soluble fibre which has been found to be a significant factor in lowering cholesterol levels. Unfortunately the same doesn’t ring true for a fry up of bacon and eggs, or pancakes with maple syrup so try to keep these to a minimum.
3. Stop those mid morning cravings!
Eat a breakfast that includes some fruit and complex carbohydrates to keep your energy levels high throughout the day. Slow energy release foods like oats or wholemeal bread are a good way to prevent those mid morning cravings which usually result in eating high calorie and low nutrient snacks.
4. Get your daily intake!
Your body needs a certain amount of vitamins, minerals and fibre each day to function at its best. Breakfast is a great way to include some of these in your diet so that you don’t have to rely on squeezing them all into the other 2 meals of the day. People who drink alcohol are more likely to be vitamin deficient. Check out our article on vita-rexia to find out more.
5. Be Smarter!
People who eat breakfast are more alert and perform better in work related tasks according to The Journal of Psychiatric Research. There is also a strong link between breakfast and increased academic performance and improved memory so make a habit of eating shortly after waking up!
6. Become Immune!!
Researchers in Wales have found that people who eat breakfast are less likely to suffer from colds, flu and other respiratory tract infections. By giving your body and early daily dose of minerals and vitamins you will ensure that your immune system will be functioning at its peak to ward off those nasty winter woes!
7. Reduce your risk
Researchers at Harvard Medical School have found that breakfast eaters are half as likely to have high blood sugar problems that can lead to diabetes and heart disease. Reduce your risk by staying away from sugary cereal and chocolate bars at the beginning of each day!
8. Don’t be depressed!
Fruits such as pineapple, kiwi fruit and banana, as well as walnuts, are high in a chemical called serotonin. A lack of serotonin can cause you to feel tired, unable to concentrate, irritated and depressed. Include some of these foods into your breakfast and you will be less likely to be emotionally distressed or suffer from depression!
