Secrets to a Successful Program

by admin on March 5, 2008

There are 3 very important factors to consider in order to turn your training program into a huge success.

#1 - Your social support network

It is a well documented fact that individuals who are accountable to a personal trainer or lifestyle coach, have much greater success in sticking with an exercise program and achieving their goals. If you are starting an exercise program, think about enlisting the help of an experienced trainer as well as relying on the support of your partner, family member, friends or work colleagues.

By sharing your fitness goals with those people close to you, it becomes so much easier to adhere to nutritional plans and the physical demands of regular exercise. You will soon find that it’s also a great way to gain motivation in the form of compliments. With the support of others it won’t be long before people are passing comment on your ‘healthy glow’ and new improved body shape!

#2 - Your nutritional plan

How well do you eat? Do you know how much carbohydrate, protein and fat is in the calories you consume? Whether your exercise goal is to increase lean muscle mass or decrease your body fat, the amount and type of calories you put into your body are integral to your success.

If you are not already doing so you can keep a nutrition log. It’s free and east to record daily nutrition on http://www.fitday.com/ so why not give it a go! By recording every aspect of your diet for at least a week, you will gain a fair understanding of the amount and type of calories you are eating. This is important as it explains where you body is getting it’s energy from and therefore what type of training you should be doing to achieve your goals.

#3 - The type of exercise you are doing

Many people blindly follow exercise plans that appear in magazines or on television programs, without putting much thought into the benefits of one plan compared to another.

For example, every morning I see people running or walking along the beach. Many of them are familiar faces who I know have started their daily routines with a walk or a jog every day for the past 7 years I have been living on the coast. Of these people, at least 75% are women and I assume that the majority of these women are walking/jogging to control their weight. How many of them realise that there is a far more effective, time efficient way for them to achieve results? How many of them understand that whole body resistance training is far more beneficial if they want to lose or maintain their weight and that by walking/jogging every day they are in fact training their bodies to become more efficient at storing fat?

Unfortunately there is plenty of misinformation within the fitness industry. It is therefore integral to the success of your fitness program, that you ensure the type of training you are doing matches the results you want!
