Make No Excuses

by admin on January 30, 2008

We all start training with the best of intentions at a time when our motivation levels are high. But how often do you really stick to your program? Have you ever found it hard to stay inspired or committed to your sessions?

Have a look at the following tips to help you moving forwards towards your training goals.

Baby Steps

When you first start a training program it’s very common to try to do too much too soon. Remember that it takes time for your body to adapt so too much intensity before you are ready will put your body at risk of injury. Setting yourself a series of small goals that are achievable will enable you to face each session without the dread of the lingering pain from the day before.

Mix it Up

Every training program needs variety to ensure that your body doesn’t become too used to the work load. By making subtle changes to your program every couple of weeks you will get maximum benefits out of your workout and help prevent any boredom that could set in.

Find a Wingman!!

Tom Cruise had one in Top Gun and you could benefit from one as well. Find yourself a training buddy so that you will be less likely to miss a session. Not only will you feel guilty if you leave your wingman waiting in the gym foyer, but it’s also good to have someone to share the pain, sense of achievement or pure laughter next time you see someone slip from the back of the treadmill!!

Stay Local

Join a gym or choose to train somewhere close to work or home. You are much more likely to stick with your program if your training easily fits into your daily routine. Training during your lunch hour or before/after work is a great way to relieve stress and a good way to transfer the benefits of exercise into other areas of your life.

Rich House Wife Therapy

Personal Trainers are usually associated with rich house wives or Hollywood stars. However, hiring a personal trainer could help highlight a few flaws that exist in your program. A good PT should be able to make your routine more productive and efficient meaning that you get fitter by working out less. Surely this is worth the investment!!

Group Dynamics

Joining a group fitness session can be a good way to master those self-motivation issues. Find an instructor that pushes you out of your comfort zone – without making you vow never to return – and pretty soon you will be hooked. Classes are also a great way of meeting people and you might even be able to find yourself a wingman!

Learn New Habits

Fitness can be a lifestyle habit that stays with you long after the wrinkles and baldness sets in. At some stage during your program you are bound to lapse whether it be after some heavy celebrating or just a tough week at work. Make a point of jumping back on the horse and getting straight back into it. Just because you missed one session doesn’t mean you need to throw in the towel completely. The sooner you get back to training the more likely you are to making fitness a future lifestlye habit.
